Arcovenator escotae lebte vor etwa 70 Millionen Jahren in der späten Kreidezeit im Gebiet des heutigen Südfrankreichs. Dieser mittelgroße Raubsaurier gehörte zu den Abelisauriden – einer Gruppe kurzschädeliger Theropoden, die vor allem auf der südlichen Erdhalbkugel verbreitet waren. Arcovenator ist ein besonders interessanter Vertreter dieser Linie, denn sein Fossilfund aus der Provence zeigt, dass diese rätselhaften Raubdinosaurier auch in Europa heimisch waren. Mit einer geschätzten Länge von rund fünf Metern war er ein wendiger Jäger, ausgestattet mit kräftigen Hinterbeinen, einem vergleichsweise kurzen Schädel und den für Abelisauriden typischen, stark verkleinerten Vorderarmen.
Sein Name bedeutet so viel wie „Bogenjäger der Arc“, benannt nach dem Fluss Arc nahe der Fundstelle. Die Landschaft dieser Zeit bestand aus Inselarchipelen, Flussdeltas und subtropischen Küstenebenen – ein Lebensraum voller kleiner Pflanzenfresser, Echsen und anderer Beutetiere, die für einen agilen Theropoden wie Arcovenator vermutlich auf dem Speiseplan standen. Abelisauriden sind zudem für ihre oft rau strukturierte Schädeloberfläche bekannt, die möglicherweise von Hornschuppen oder keratinösen Aufsätzen bedeckt war – ein Detail, das ihnen ein besonders markantes Erscheinungsbild verlieh.
Das Modell von José Jorge Pereiro bringt diesen europäischen Raubsaurier als detailreiche Tabletop-Miniatur auf den Spieltisch. Der Resindruck ist in 1:56 (32 mm), 1:64 (28 mm) und 1:72 erhältlich und eignet sich hervorragend für prähistorische Dioramen, Lost-World-Rollenspielwelten oder als ungewöhnliche Kreatur in einem Wargaming-Encounter. Eine kleine wissenschaftliche Kuriosität am Rand: Arcovenator gehört zu den wenigen eindeutig nachgewiesenen Abelisauriden Europas und zeigt, wie stark die Dinosaurierfauna der Kreidezeit trotz der damaligen Inselkontinente miteinander verbunden war.
